First attempt at a smocked cushion

I've have enjoyed learning a form of smocking which my Mum used to do so much of, making us girls pretty dresses with smocked bodices.
I was quite pleased with my first effort, however now that I have the hang of it, I will be making a couple of others with more suitable fabric for my colour schemes.
I took a few pictures as I went along.

One of my sisters gave me this fabric for my trial cushion as she had been given a whole bolt of it. Lucky me!!


The area to be smocked had to be marked out in a 1" grid.

The fun part beings....this is the wrong side of the fabric where the smocking is done.
The smocking is complete and one side is drawn in.
Time to stuff it!

And draw that side together.

I thought I took a photo of covering the buttons, but I mustn't have!

The middle of the cushion needed to be stitched through to create a well in the centre and then the buttons are sewn in place.
Here it is!


Next time I will smock the pattern closer together so the pattern is more dense..not so loose.

You would quite often have found these type of cushions sitting on the parcel shelf in front of the back window of the old Holden cars.

Tomato and Zucchini bake
This recipe is a really easy dish to accompany any cooked meat and other vegetables.

Spray a baking dish with olive oil and layer thinly sliced zucchinis then tomatoes over the top. Shake some salt and pepper over with a drizzle of olive oil and sprinkle with a layer of shredded cheese. Repeat the above as many times as you want. Cover with alfoil and bake in a moderate over for around an hour. Take the alfoil off in the last 15 minutes of cooking to allow it to brown.

Ready to go into the oven.
Ready to be devoured!!

I am amazed Annette! Your work is incredible. I love smocking and always dressed my children in smocked clothing when they were little. I did it with my last one until finally he said, "mom, I'm not a baby." lol Your pillow is gorgeous! Wow!

The cushions is rather lovely and different. A lightbulb has just gone on in my head. I've seen those cushions before and always wondered how they were made, now I know. I'm wondering if the same method could be used for a pincushion.

I just love that vintage style of cushion. It doesn't look that difficult, perhaps I'll give it a go one day. You've done a great job.
